A Six Year Old Gets It, But I Don’t

My wife told me that she gave her six-year-old daughter money to buy popcorn at school.  When she got to school, she saw a collection for the people of Haiti.  She gladly put all of her popcorn money into that collection.  Children tend to be very selfish, and it is through the process of growing up that they learn to be generous.  Here is a six-year-old, that is more generous than a 35 year old (me).

She gets it.

I don’t.

I haven’t given anything to Haitian relief efforts.  All I can think of is that they are ripe with fraud and little if any of the money we give will get to those who need it.  For most of my adult life GOD has blessed me with financial security.  I keep track of every dollar I earn and spend.  I average 1.5% giving to charity.  Disgusting.  GOD has given me all of this and I can only muster up 1.5%.

So from now on, I will do my best to act like a six-year-old that I know.

Often kids get it…and we don’t. We adults with our worldly wisdom, our life experience (the stuff that hardens our hearts) “know better”. We consider what the world says…the kids listen to their heart, the heart that Jesus gave them.

If we learn from them then it is good, if we don’t, not so good.

    Acts 2: 42-45

    (42) They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. (43) Everyone was filled with awe, and many wonders and miraculous signs were done by the apostles. (44) All the believers were together and had everything in common. (45) Selling their possessions and goods, they gave to anyone as he had need.
